Mandamambwe Business Centre sitting on health time bomb

MHANDAMABWE - Mhandamabwe Business Centre which is located along Masvingo-Zvishavane highway in Chivi district is sitting on a health time bomb as waste from blair toilets spill out towards the food takeaways nearby, posing serious threats of cholera outbreak.

Green bomber flies from the toilets were seen preying on the food which was being sold to revellers at the open spaces takeaways at the business centre.

 Chivi Rural District (RDC) chairperson, Killer Zivhu, confirmed the dire situation at Mhandamabwe and said; if funds permitting, there was need to introduce the flash system toilets.

“The situation is bad and it can cause health problems. It would be great to introduce flash system toilets at Mhandamabwe but council is facing financial constraints to construct sewer pipeline there. We have other pressing issues which council should give priority to but once we get the funds we will certainly introduce the flash system at most of the business centres in the district,” Zivhu said.

Many of the blair toilets at Mandamambwe are full with others even spilling human waste and urine out. Flies often carry bacteria which can cause disease like cholera, dysentery and typhoid from human waste to the prepared food.

Ward 30 councillor Godard Dunira however, said business people at Mhandamabwe should consider introducing eco-sun toilets and do away with blair toilets.

“The situation at Mandamambwe especially at Mudzivo Supermarket is pathetic; we once discussed it in the council chambers. Blair toilets have been generally condemned because they cause damage to the environment so I would suggest that they introduce eco-sun toilets while council raise funds for the sewer system,” said Dunira.

Vendors at Mhandamabwe also over emphasized the need to introduce sewer system saying the population at the business centre was too huge for the few available blair toilets. Revellers at bars at Mhandamabwe also relieve themselves in the same toilets.
