CHIVI TO INTRODUCE ECO-SUN TOILETS

Chivi District to introduce eco-sun toilets

By Ntombiyolwandle Ndlovu

CHIVI - Chivi Rural District Council (RDC) is set to introduce eco-sun toilets following research that blair toilets, which are in many rural homes, cause serious damage to the environment.

Addressing Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Media and Culturals Studies students at a Press Conference at Chivi Growth Point recently, Ward 30 councillor Godard Dunira said they were planning to brush away blair toilets and replace them with eco-sun toilets which have been recommended by health and environmental experts.

“Blair toilets have been condemned because research revealed that they cause serious damage to the soil. An Eco-sun toilet is the way to go because the system is both user friendly and environment friendly. Plans are already underway to introduce eco-sun toilets in the district,” said Dunira.

An eco-toilet is more like the bucket toilet where the user can offload the waste at a safer place when after reliving oneself.

Chivi RDC Chairman Killer Zivu echoed the same sentiments saying blair toilet is the
worst ever form of toilet which was only implemented in Africa because of poverty.

“You cannot even spend two minutes bathing in a blair toilet with the stink smell coming out from the hole. The stinky can suffocate you while bathing; therefore there is need to introduce modern toilets like flash system and eco-sun.

If the project is implemented, Chivi will be the first district in the province to have eco-sun toilets. Ward 11 councillor Nyambi however, emphasised the importance of engaging opinion leaders in the area in developmental issues so that they provide technical know-how.

Nyambi said he has since roped in teachers, nurses and Arex officers in his ward in various projects where they provide expertise.
